Groups of attentive listeners think over what a guide is saying at the
city’s majestic entrance. Already one realises that Mdina has something
special to offer.
It is believed that the city existed in Roman times but that it was much
bigger than it presently is. Most probably it extended right up to the
place where the Museum of Roman Antiquities stands today. It could not
have gone very much further since tombs and catacombs were found there
and burial took place out of the city walls according to Roman and Arab
tradition and law.
When Malta passed under the Arab domination in 870 AD the city of Melita
not only changed its name to Medina (the city) but also changed its size.
