These identical towers watched over the coast and were within sight of
each other in such a way that one could signal the other whenever danger
lingered on the horizon. This tower which gave its name to the street
of Malta’s most popular seaside promenade, is still in use as an open-air
bar and restaurant.
The defences of the Sliema area were further enhanced by Fort Tigne in
1795. The fort was named after Bailiff Tigne who gave a considerable amount
of money for its erection. But, alas, the threatening clouds of the French
Revolution were looming over the Maltese shores as well and about three
years after the fort’s construction the Order was expelled by Napoleon
Bonaparte.
